“I want to travel round the world;

even outsIde the Earth!"

Being an unusual name in Turkish pop music with his music, lyrics, and music videos, Mabel Matiz described his musical journey and new album Maya.

 Firstly, let's go back in time when you began your musical career. Every single song you make, every single lyric you write, and every single thing you do cause a sensation! Were you expecting such an interest?

Music has always been in my life ever since I was a child. I started to write songs after starting university when I first bought my guitar. Seeing that these songs have a meaning, I published them online. It was a small and private page that had no information about who I was. However, it grew and got a place on MySpace. Then I met Enkin Akıncı, my manager and started my musical career. Engin said "How about recording these songs in an album?" At that time I didn't have anything like that in my mind. I used the nickname Mabel for I was afraid of being popular and known, and it's taken precedence over everything.

In your songs you create stories in which everyone finds a deep meaning. How does Mabel Matiz nourish himself?

Mainly, I narrate what I have gone through and felt. However, sometimes when I look at the World, things that I see around also subjects for my songs. For instance, my new single Ya Bu Isler Ne mentions both...

Let's touch on your music videos which are spoken by the public as much as your songs are. Do you take part in creating stories for the music videos?

First, we focus on the song and how it makes you feel. We go where the song takes us to. For example, Ahu took as to Morocco; when they focused on, the whole team actually wanted to visit Morocco. For the song Gok Nerede we talked about finding an extraterrestrial place, full of rocks and such... We found a mine in Kilyos and shot the video. I am always there in the creative process of the videos. I have worked with Anil Can for some of the latest video shooting.

Can you tell us the story of your single -Ya Bu İşler Ne- that has become a fast hit?

Ya Bu Isler Ne is quite a personal song. I just write things that I understand and do not understand about my story in my lyrics. I ask my burden some questions. And if you ask me, this is a Turkish folk song; however, since I have become obsessed with dance and electronic music lately, I've tried to create a sound in that style and tried to try something new. People were expecting to hear another "Gel" (one of the hit songs by the singer) most probably, but I love to deal with the unknown more. For this reason, I believe this song is a new beginning. It was written and composed by me and arranged by Sabi Saltiel.

You have made a video full of references for this song. Can you go into the details of preparing the video process?

Anil Can whose wit, ideas, and visual world I appreciate shot the video. I see himself as a rather talented artist. He is also the name behind the creative ideas for the video. Special costumes were made by Emre Erdemoglu, Hakan Akkaya and Anil Can for the video of which director of photography is Eren Yildiz. There are some references to people who consume constantly and to what has become of the world. "What is going on?" (The name of the song as well) is the question I've been asking myself and the world most. This is a song in search of reaching beyond personal worries and looking at the bigger picture.

As you mentioned earlier, the name of your album is "Maya". How is the preparation process going? Anythings new?

My fourth album Maya is to be released in the coming months and  it seems that it will have a long journey. I mean to make myself heard abroad and continue the journey of Maya. I am in pursuit of a more global journey musically. The lyrics are simpler and contain traces of folk music, I think. The sound will kind of be a mixture of Turkish folk melodies and electronic music. The reportoire includes ballads and dance songs. There is also a co-written song. I am working with producers like Sabi Saltiel, Kaan Duzarat, Mark Dobson, and Ah! Kosmos.

Have you planned a course of action? Do you have any dreams to realise?

To make songs the whole world listens to... To travel round the world! Even outside the Earth!

And one final question: what else does Mabel Matiz do aside from work? How does he spend his free time and holidays?

I love travelling. That is how I relax my soul. I have been to Kabak, Bodrum, and Kas this summer. And I made a short trip to Madrid in the beginning of July, which was nice. I cross stitch in my free time. Being alone soothes me. Books, movies, friends... They all do good to me.

I love to try the unknown!
